Value engineering

Amec Foster Wheeler is an industry leader in Value Engineering (VE), successfully providing these services for departments of transportation, municipalities, and federal agencies throughout North America and internationally since 1976. We have conducted more than 870 value studies worldwide, on projects with a total value over $22 billion.

Our approach for VE analysis follows the SAVE International Value Methodology Standard and is divided into pre- and post-study activities in addition to the VE Study itself. Following this standard, the Job Plan developed includes the following phases:

1.Information
2.Function Analysis
3.Creative
4.Evaluation
5.Development
6.Presentation

Generally, the goal of any value methodology program is to review selected projects and to identify alternative ideas that add value by reducing costs, improving designs, and/or saving time through the Value Engineering study process. We understand this scope and specifically prepare our Teams to respond to client-specific requirements. Our approach focuses on two key elements integral to providing successful VE studies:

  • Strength of experience and qualifications of the VE Team Facilitator to drive the process
  • Engineering expertise of the Team Members in their respective fields of discipline
Amec Foster Wheeler’s VE team includes Certified Value Specialists (CVS) and Associate Value Specialists (AVS) who encompass transportation, government, commercial, water/wastewater, and mechanical engineering experience. With strong engineering backgrounds, and having worked for various federal and state agencies, these CVS/AVS have extensive VE experience in a wide range of sectors.

Additionally, Amec Foster Wheeler’s breadth of internal professional resources enables the VE group to add to or supplement staff for any specific team member requirements including highway, structural, stormwater management, traffic, constructability, environmental, pavement, foundation, geotechnical, mining, airports, and ports expertise.

We also have a wide range of VE training options available including a formal 40-hour SAVE-approved Module I VE workshop; in cooperation with three, four, or five-day NHI VE workshops; one- or two-day VE training; and two-hour Ex-ecutive VE training. Additionally, Amec Foster Wheeler has prepared and presented a one-day VE training workshop to various agencies. We are especially proud to be the US Federal Highway Administration National Highway Institute’s (NHI) sole source of VE training (course 134005) to state DOTs for more than 25 years.
