The heating of process services with heat transfer fluids is very important in several processes of refineries, petrochemical and chemical plants. The most common and flexible means of heat distribution to various users is the use of a hot oil system, which must be very reliable and the fired heater very flexible.
The heart of the hot oil system is the fired heater. These systems are typically required when steam operating pressures/temperatures are not satisfactory for the heat source. In most cases there are a number of services being heated by heat exchangers in a hot oil system.
Most hot oils are proprietary fluids meant for high temperature operation, but they must not exceed certain temperatures as they will degrade. Special care is required in the fired heater design to obtain the necessary outlet temperature but not exceed the maximum inside film temperature limit of the fluid. Due to the variety of industries served, liquid or gaseous fuels are burnt in this process
