Our programmes

Our traineeships and apprenticeships fall into three main areas. 

Trainee designer
Ideal for people who are committed to a future in engineering, our trainee designer programme is a formal and nationally recognised modern apprenticeship. You’ll have the opportunity to focus on a range of specialist areas - all of which will offer a blend of formal and on-the-job training. To begin your journey, just find the area that interests you the most.

  • Electrical designer
    Joining a dedicated engineering and design team, you’ll work on all things electrical on a huge range of onshore and offshore projects.

    Challenges will include:
    • Producing electrical drawings and documents for demanding projects
    • Using electrical design software packages such as 2D AutoCAD, MicroStation and 3D PDMS
    • Carrying out onshore and offshore surveys
    • Attending factory acceptance tests.
  • Piping designer
    Becoming a valued member of a dedicated team, you’ll help us ensure that our plant layout and piping design work is done to the highest standards.

    Your work could include:
    • Preparing plant layout and piping isometric drawings
    • Helping to put together technical datasheets in other disciplines
    • Taking part in onshore and offshore surveys.
  • Instrument designer
    You’ll deliver measurements and drawings for new and modified instruments across a wide range of disciplines. By doing so, you’ll create the right instruments for a variety of offshore and onshore assets.

    Your work could include:
    • Putting together work that meets our customers’ specific requirements
    • Working in a team to support onshore and offshore surveys
    • Mastering drawing packages such as AutoCAD, MicroStation and 3D PDMS.
  • Structural designer
    Supporting the safe delivery of customer projects, you’ll produce a wide range of fabrication and installation drawings. This will see you involved from conceptual design through to production detail.

    Your work could include:
    • Producing 2D design and fabrication drawings
    • Creating installation drawings
    • Undertaking onshore and offshore surveys and site visits.
  • Engineering systems
    Joining a specialised and experienced team, you’ll help provide engineering applications for projects right across our business. As such, you’ll work with colleagues in a huge range of other functions.

    Your work could include:
    • Becoming an expert in key applications
    • Providing frontline support to end users on a variety of projects
    • Working with other teams to install, configure and customise new engineering applications.

Trainee quality engineer
This is a vital role within Amec Foster Wheeler. You’ll learn how to make sure we’re delivering our work to the highest standards. This will see you working on all kinds of projects in all areas of our business.

Your work could include:
  • Promoting a quality culture that keeps our people inspired to deliver in the right way
  • Engaging with, and supporting, teams across the business
  • Studying for a CQI Diploma in Quality Management.

Project controls
This key role will put you right at the heart of every kind of project we do. Whether you join straight out of school, university or, are looking for a change of career, you’ll learn how to assess and manage the whole range of risks that may impact a project.

Your work could include:
  • Establishing effective planning for timescales, resource availability and safety
  • Mastering the art of cost control and new business tendering
  • Putting in place solid people processes and procedures.
You’ll gain these skills by working on real life projects from day one. You’ll also study for a Diploma in Project Controls and the Chartered Management Institute Diploma in First Line Management.
