We awarded a contract by Mirant Corporation to provide owner’s engineering services as well as field technical support for construction and start-up of two General Electric combustion turbines operating in simple cycle mode, and two 345KV switch yards (phase one).
Our successful performance on phase one of the project led Mirant to extend the contract to include services for the installation of two Vogt-New Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSG) and one General Electric D-11 steam turbine/generator at the Sugar Creek generating plant in West Terre Haute.
Our phase one responsibilities included reviewing the EPC contractor’s deliverables and field services as outlined by the client. This phase went commercial in June 2002 - both on schedule and within Mirant’s budget. We provided on-site engineering services and worked with Mirant to solve technical designs and start-up issues.
In phase two, we continued to provide owner’s engineering services, field engineering, construction management assistance, and assistance in facility start-up and commissioning. Phase two involved converting the existing two General Electric gas turbines to combined cycle mode with the addition of a General Electric D-11 steam turbine, and HRSG. This phase achieved commercial operation in February 2003.
In an area known for its coal production, the Sugar Creek plant is fuelled solely by natural gas. The facility uses advanced combined-cycle technology, which captures steam emitted from natural gas electricity production to provide additional electricity at a lower cost.
