Overcoming logistical challenges at Ontario’s first diamond mine

We completed the engineering, procurement and construction management contract for Ontario’s first diamond mine. The Victor Diamond Mine, located in northern Ontario, is about 90 kilometres west of the First Nation community of Attawapiskat in the James Bay lowlands.

"The Victor Mine project represents a major investment for De Beers, [Amec Foster Wheeler] has played an invaluable role."
Jeremy Wyeth, VP of De Beers Canada and project executive responsible for the Victor Mine

The mine’s location created a number of logistical challenges, including limited access for transporting resources. During the construction phase of the mine, 400 kilometre winter road was only available for two month each year – to transport all necessary equipment, resources and other items for the entire year.

We successfully handled all logistical challenges and completed this project nine months ahead of schedule and under budget. The project also provides sustainable, long-term employment for First Nation communities and other communities in northern Ontario with approximately 375 workers involved in the ongoing diamond production.

Our engineers, project managers and technical specialists have designed, delivered and supported many of the world’s landmark mineral and metal assets. Our mining professionals deliver a customer-focused approach from offices across Canada, US, Peru, Chile, Brazil, and the UK.
