Designing a new 49.9MW geothermal plant

We were engaged by Hudson Ranch Power to provide design engineering for a 49.9 megawatt geothermal plant to be constructed at the project site near Holtville, California.

The facility will be a triple flash plant using crystallizer reactor clarifier technology to process the geothermal brine and steam from the Salton Sea production wells. The plants electrical output will be connected to the local community-owned utility, imperial irrigation district transmission system at 230kV. The facility will be operated via a commercially-available distributed control system. The plant will also include an administration building and separate machine shop and warehouse.

The plant is to be designed with installed spare capacity, redundancy, and other features to achieve an annual capacity factor of 98 per cent. The design of the systems and the equipment provide maximum reliability for Hudson Ranch Power. Critical spares such as brine system control valves and critical turbine spare parts are kept in the owner's on-site inventory. The plant’s seismic design analysis is consistent with current version of the 'California Building Standards Code'.
