Delivering an award winning facility for Hunter Medical Research Institute

The new HMRI building accommodates over 450 medical researchers from the University of Newcastle and Hunter New England Health as the focal point for the coordination of research into improved health for the region.

The HMRI brief was for a state of the art facility providing PC2 medical research and training facilities, large PC2/SPF animal facilities and innovative PC2 biotechnology and commercial research laboratories. The new facility also incorporates clinical trials facilities, shared laboratory support services, offices, lecture theatre, meeting rooms and interaction spaces.

The PC2/SPF Bio-Resources area was specially designed to enable HMRI to efficiently conduct a changeover regime from containment to clean to facilitate future proofing of the facility.

The functional areas of the 16,000 m2 facility are as follows:

  • Level 1: PC2 Animal and procedure rooms, external animal holding areas, histology lab, bio-resources unit, freezer farm, offices/meeting rooms, plant rooms
  • Level 2: PC2 Laboratories, mice lung function laboratories, tissue/cell culture, freezer/cold rooms, offices/meeting rooms, plant rooms
  • Level 3: PC2 Laboratories, PCR rooms, cell culture, freezer/cold rooms, offices/meeting rooms, plant rooms
  • Level 4: Offices/meeting rooms, seminar rooms, lecture theatre, canteen, clinical trial rooms, plant rooms
  • Level 5: Plant rooms
