Consumer-driven market shifts to Greek-style yogurt

For several years, consumer demand has driven a change in the marketplace toward strained Greek-style yogurts. The market has gone from a minimal share of yogurt sales to around half of US yogurt sales within this short time.

Desire for healthy options, higher protein content, lower portions of fat and sugar, and products that are preservative-free has impacted the industry. Product SKU’s have been increasing rapidly to meet consumer preferences. Consumers also desire new flavors and the convenience of added fruit, nut, and other snack ingredients packaged with their yogurt.

Amec Foster Wheeler has implemented multiple projects in yogurt processing, packaging, and the associated facilities and utilities, delivering a scope of services in virtually every aspect of the projects including:

  • A major focus has been on product chilling to comply with dairy safety guidelines - process design solutions have ranged from heat exchange equipment while in the vessels or process piping, to special coolers for unitised loads
  • Adaptations to new packaging, and on-demand container molding integrated into the packaging line
  • New technologies in advanced robotic automation which are advancing efficiency and capacity in cartoning and case packing, as well as facilitating quicker changeovers
  • Environmental responsibility and the phase-out of certain refrigerants has necessitated projects to upgrade chilling and refrigeration systems

Consumer health and product innovation are driving projects in the yogurt industry. Amec Foster Wheeler has been a provider of solutions to these challenges and many more in process manufacturing industries.
