Award winning design on 300MW coal-fired power plant

Saskatchewan Power Corporation contracted with us to provide detail design, contract analysis assistance and engineering management for the installation of the first full scale SO2 removal system at a Canadian utility and the first greenfield LIFAC sorbent injection (zero waste discharge) facility in North America.

The work was executed at SaskPower’s Shand Power Plant a 300MW coal-fired power plant in Estevan, Saskatchewan. As a result of its work on this ground breaking project, we were the recipient of the Canadian Consulting Engineering Award in 1994. The project also received the Power Plant Award from Power Magazine for it’s advanced environmental design.

The project also included:

  • Boiler equipped with dual register burners utilizing in-burner staging to minimize NOx formation while maintaining high carbon conversion;
  • A closed-loop, zero-discharge water management system with no water discharge from the plant except through evaporation;
  • First application of CRT only operator interface at a Canadian utility
  • Supply of hot water from the condenser circulating water system to heat an adjacent greenhouse.
