August 2015 - A Loss of Coolant Accident (LOCA) may indirectly damage plant safety systems, including the containment boundary, by the effect of missiles generated by the LOCA. In this paper, a study to develop a modern numerical modelling technique to estimate damage by missiles is described. Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) has been applied to simulate the acceleration of the missile due to the fluid jet.

June 2015 - This paper describes the validation efforts conducted on an online corrosion monitoring technique in several CFB boilers. The method – originally developed for mildly aggressive recycled wood – was deployed in boilers co-firing a variety of fuels, including coal, woody biomass, agricultural residues, and waste-derived fuels. Validation of the online method was conducted against metal wastage measured in real boiler components, in test pieces temporarily installed in the boilers, and in test probes. These three types of measurements provided full understanding of the online monitor capabilities and its validation for long-, mid-, and short-term corrosion.

August 2015 - This paper presents probabilistic analysis of structural capacity of pre-stressed concrete containments subjected to internal pressure. The conventional design methods for containments are based on allowable stress codes which ensure certain factor of safety between expected load and expected structural strength.

July 2015 - Circulating fluidized-bed (CFB) combustion technology has been around for over 40 years, but over the last 6 years it has been commercially demonstrated at the 500 MWe scale at the Łagisza plant located in Będzin, Poland. The CFB at the Łagisza plant has unique first-of-a-kind design features, such as vertical-tube supercritical steam technology and a low temperature flue-gas heat extraction that allows the plant to achieve high plant efficiencies of over 43% (net lower heating value). Another unusual feature for a coal power plant is that this plant meets all its atmospheric emission permit levels without any post-combustion de-NOx or de-SOx equipment such as selective catalytic reduction (SCR) or flue-gas desulphurization (FGD).
